Terry’s career as a top salesman in Southern California began in 1955 when he first sold Kellogg Nitrohumus while working at Mafair Garden Shop in San Diego. Terry spent the next 18 years working in retail nurseries where he earned his certification by CAN in 1970 (#64 = which is the 8th lowest active number in California today).
Terry was hired by Kellogg in August 1973. Immediately, his contribution was felt as he assumed various roles in the operations side of the business such as: mixing, bagging, loading, delivering and order entry. Shortly thereafter, Terry became a Territory Manager where, in his first year, he had a 100% increase over previous sales of Kellogg in his area. He also was the first Territory Manager to sell over $200,000 and $300,000 in a month without any mass merchants.
During his days on the road, Terry invented several ways to demonstrate the effectiveness of Kellogg soil products. In one such demonstration, that he coined the “Kellogg Challenge”, he would plant a tomato in a bag of Kellogg Amend. Inevitably, the tomato would flourish and begin yielding a bountiful harvest without the help of any fertilizer. Needless to say, Terry sold a lot of Amend in his time on the road. Terry is also known for launching new products, such as 20# Sulfate of Ammonia, and new product lines, such as 2 cu. ft. Decorative Bark, which ended up spreading throughout the industry like wildfire. In 1997, Terry served as the Sales & Merchandise Manager for Kellogg overseeing and training many of Kellogg’s sales staff and weekend advocates. However, Terry would probably tell you that his greatest accomplishment in sales is the fact that he has driven over 1 million miles in various climates without a traffic incident.
To all those who know him, Terry is a humble and generous man with warm smile, honest handshake and a couple free red Kellogg pens. All of his customers have attested to his faithful friendship and shrewd business savvy. Terry is a man who brings genuine concern and sage counsel everywhere he goes.
In addition to his personal titles as Husband, Father, Grandfather, US Military Veteran, Gardener and Pet Lover, Terry has also been distinguished with such professional titles as: Kellogg Chairman Award winner, Kellogg President Award winner, Supplier Tradesman of the Year and the 1995 Tradesman of the Year.
Now after 33 illustrious years with Kellogg Garden Products, Terry & Mary Weatherford have decided to start a new chapter in their lives together and we wish them all the best!
From all of us at Kellogg,
