17 May INTERVIEW WITH JEREMIAH CHURCHILL
Rebuilding Together – Valley of the Sun
Jeremiah Churchill likes to build things and help people. This Vermont native grew up on a dairy farm and has spent his life serving in various organizations like the United States Marine Corps, the Peace Corps, and AmeriCorps. These days, he’s the Director of Construction Operations for Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun in Phoenix, Arizona.
Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun is a non-profit whose mission is to engage community partners and volunteers in the revitalization of neighborhoods. They accomplish this by providing low-income seniors, the disabled, and veterans with safer homes, leading to more comfortable and independent lives. This is where Jeremiah comes in — if it needs to be built, he’s the man. Wheelchair ramps, grab bars, shower benches, and yes, even raised bed gardens all get Jeremiah’s attention.
“I’ve always loved gardening,” Jeremiah says, “and I’ve used Kellogg Garden Products in my own garden for over 10 years now. So that’s what I wanted to use for our Rebuilding Together garden projects.” Being familiar with the quality of Kellogg Garden Products allows him to feel confident in using them for people who need a little extra help to lead healthy and independent lives.
Recipients of raised bed gardens include senior living communities, community centers, and schools. “It’s important to use to build garden beds that will help people to be successful with their gardens,” Jeremiah states, “so we use a lot of Kellogg Raised Bed & Potting Mix in the vegetable and herb gardens, and Kellogg All Natural Garden Soil when planting trees.”
Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun depends upon volunteer participation to complete their building projects for those in need, and Jeremiah reports that the convenience of bagged Kellogg Garden Products is key. “We sometimes don’t have very good access to the project area, so the ability to carry quality garden soil in bags really helps our volunteers to get the job done,” he says.
When Jeremiah leads volunteers in constructing raised beds, their goal is to always leave people with a garden that has the best chance of performing well. “While we don’t engage in maintenance of these gardens,” he says, “we show people how to get the garden started and how to care for the plants. Because we use Kellogg Garden Products, we know we’re giving them the best.”
Kellogg Garden Products is proud to be the product of choice for such an admirable organization that serves its community — a commitment that Kellogg values and shares. Knowing that our organic soils are a part of helping people in Phoenix, Arizona live healthier and more independent lives is why we do what we do. Thank you, Jeremiah Churchill and Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun, for your community leadership and inspiring good work.
